- The following is my book review on The Ultimate Prescription by Dr. James L. Marcum, MD
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32, KJV).
While I purposefully chose this book to review on behalf of Tyndale House Publishers, I was anticipating a hard read full of medical facts and jargon. However, in The Ultimate Prescription Dr. Marcum uses personal language and experience to outline his view regarding creation and its role in “God’s Health Plan.”
“I want you to consider trusting God in a way you’ve never trusted Him before. I want you to begin worshipping the God who creates science instead of worshipping at the altar of human interpretation of that science” (49).
From the very beginning Dr. Marcum issues the above challenge offering clarity regarding many medical misconceptions in a way the reader can both understand and relate to the ultimate prescription as outlined in the Bible.
Although I do not agree with all of the author’s suggestions, I feel he has pointed us in the right direction for maintaining good health. And—though I understand His heart as described in these pages (165-170)—I feel we must be very careful when speaking of the path of sin, judgment and the position of our Savior not to mislead others away from judgment and true repentance. No, we do not serve a condemning God who offers no hope; but rather we follow the conviction of the Holy Spirit finding our hope in a saving Christ. We are judged guilty of sin through the fall. We owe the wages of that sin, which is death. We receive redemption of that sin through our acceptance of the Cross—where He paid our debt, and we turn from our sin with a repentant heart. {See this post for my thoughts.} I will say, the ultimate goal is indeed to both receive and offer His love to all.
I especially appreciate the candor Dr. Marcum portrays when speaking of the medical profession and the provisions he has made to give the reader further understanding through appendixes and follow up questions in the back of his book.
Rather than reveal those truths to you here, I would encourage to purchase the book and rightly divide Scripture as you make an educated decision regarding your health needs. You may also want to visit heartwiseministies.org for further information.
