Break the Generation Curse

The following is an outline of the book Break the Generation Curse by Marilyn Hickey.  Though it is an older book, it is a must read for those who wish to break negative patterns within their families.

“Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me… ” Ex. 20:5
  • Lay the foundation.

There are two sides of the Generational Curse. As Christians we know that we are not under the curse, we are under the blood. While God has called each of us to stand by this knowledge, we cannot forsake our position in this.

(1.) Rev. 12:11 tells us that we overcome by the blood & the words of our testimony. We know that Satan cannot cross the bloodline of Jesus.

(2.) Hos. 4:6 tells us to seek knowledge, to search out & identify truth.

It’s not that the enemy has greater power over us. It’s our choice. We choose it! We have chosen the path of ignorance. Yes, there are some things we don’t know because He hasn’t revealed them to us. He will always meet us at the point of our need and our level of understanding.

It’s about the decisions we make and the positions we take in them. We must always remember, He knows to do good and doesn’t, it is sin to him. It is a choice to be ignorant and this does not excuse us from sin.

He said, you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. (Jo. 8:32) This means we are given the ability to be set free by our knowledge of the truth. We cannot be free or walk in the truths of what we do not know. What good is the truth to you, if you do not know what it is? This is why He calls us to seek knowledge by searching the scriptures.

Our conviction comes by the Holy Spirit, through the word of God, and our increased knowledge of it (Him). The Holy Spirit draws us to the truths of His words. The key is found it what we know. We find this through our obedience & adherence to His word.

Be diligent, not disobedient!

In Deut. 11:26-28; 28:1, 2 God calls us to serve with diligence. We know those who serve god will produce His seed. We know that the law does not bind us, but, there’s more to it than that, (See: Deut. 28:4; Eph. 1:17-20; Col. 1:9-12).

Yes, we are redeemed and made free from the curse by the blood! (Gal. 3:13) However, we must also listen to and follow His word. This is outlined in Deut. 28 entirely.
We must first recognize that there’s something wrong. (Lev. 18:5) Then, when He speaks to us, we must LISTEN! (Rom. 8:28; Lev. 19:9)

Listen & learn, be willing to wait!

We must ask for His covering and speak His word over our situation. We must remember that the spoken word is our strongest defensive weapon in warfare against the enemy!

We remain under this covering by abiding in the strict segregation of His word and preserving His statues. We must know and understand that we cannot do this within ourselves and must abide in Jesus, who is the living word, and who has conquered all things for us on the cross.

We must come to realize that our ignorance will cause us to fail and our disobedience will defile us. Take a look at the suffering of Israel. Here we learn that we must be obedient. Speaking and confessing His word is not enough.

Grace does not excuse sin and disobedience! Again, He who knows to do good and doesn’t, it is sin to him. (Ja. 4:17) Belief only is not it. We must know His word is true without question and position ourselves to stand on it. (John 17:7) This is where we exercise perseverance.

Pitch the tent of prayer, and occupy in the camp of obedience!

Yes, you can be saved and have a curse in operation over your life! The provisions to overcome this are found through fasting and prayer. (Matt. 17:21) An example is found in Daniel’s fast of 21 days. (Dan. 9:10-12)

Here we are able to see so much of ourselves while gaining a closer, intimate relationship with Him. Through this, we are able to take a closer look at His character. His characters are His fruit, the greatest of these being love. Through prayer, we are to abide in Him. To abide in Him is to abide in love!

Let’s take a look at this for a moment, clearly we see in Ex. 20:5, as listed above, that the curse is rooted in hatred. To combat this, we must exercise our Holy replacement part, LOVE! Did he not say, this is my commandment that ye love one another?

While positioning ourselves in the place of prayer, we must occupy in obedience. Continue to persevere while standing and waiting! Call upon at least one other person to intercede with you and listen to His voice together! Seek out the person who radically seeks out God, (no matter who, no matter how)! Through intercession, He will deliver the land! (Dan. 13:10; Eph. 6:12)

Again, He gave us the choice! Remember, the land was cursed due to past sin and judgment was passed down from generation to generation. It doesn’t matter how we label it, we are either in freedom from it, or in bondage to it! (Lev. 18:25; Deut. 11:26-28; 27:15-26; 28:1-14)

Clear the camp, remove the waste!

Although we are not guilty, we will still suffer the consequences of such sin if not dealt with scripturally. We know that Jesus dealt with this for us on the cross, (Gal. 3:13.14; the cure for the curse is the cross). However, upon receiving this deliverance, we are required to break the curse through our confession, repentance, and forgiveness.

Where iniquity is present and has been poured out, we must forgive those who have caused it. (Deut. 7:25) We must destroy all things associated with the iniquity through faith in His word, and in Jesus Christ himself.

Call forth His plans and make room for His Promise!

We must walk in obedience in order to receive deliverance! Remember, this is WAR, and the tearing down of strongholds is a two-fold battle. We fight this battle spiritually through our prayer, and openly through our position! We must first know who we are in Him and exercise that authority!

We have a legally binding agreement with Him through the cross, signed in His blood. This is our covenant with Him! We must call forth His plans and trust in Him to work it out. This is where we are to simply, “Trust and obey”. He will plant His people ion our path to help us through every step of the way. We must now submit to Him and surrender to those plans. We have to trust Him! Just trust Him! (“Tis’ so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His word…”)

If we refuse to submit, our will “will” stop the very thing we are praying for. We must humble ourselves in this place recognizing that He knows much more than we do and as soon as we stop trying to figure it all out, we know He has already worked it all out. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. (Is. 55:8. 9)

Man your battle stations! Release your weapons!  Ignorance and pride are two of the greatest tools of the enemy. It is our job be aware of them, and resist him. We must learn to utilize are weapons and combat the enemy by submitting everything over to God.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Reverse the curse at its roots! Thank Him for what He has done, praise Him in advance, for what He is going to do, and worship Him for who He is! He is our deliverer! Know that the deliverance only comes through the moving of His hand, through our obedience.

This is the cycle of kingdom work in us. If we don’t learn the lesson, we will live it! We must exercise the law of resiprosity. We are His seed. We reap our harvest to produce HIS!

  • About face, forward march…

In salvation, we find deliverance. Through our deliverance, we can lead others. Having done all we can, we must stand! This is where we march on in the gospel of peace. He is Lord! His word is true and He will set us free! In the fullness of His peace, we are made whole. He will bring all things to completion. He is with you.He will never leave you nor forsake you. When you fall, know where you will land. He will pick you up! He will carry you through. In your weakness, He is made strong. In His peace, find rest in His words.
